Shipment to India
Rolled Steel Coil Shipment to Uttar Pradesh, India
This case study details the successful transport of 50 high-value steel coils weighing 5,000 kgs from the United Kingdom to Uttar Pradesh, India. The multi-stage journey, encompassing sea and demanding overland transit, necessitated a departure from standard procedures to ensure the integrity of the cargo and the transport units.
Our Approach: Meticulous Planning
The initial phase involved rigorous and meticulous planning, acknowledging the high density of the cargo and the complexities of a multi-modal journey.
- Container Selection & Inspection: We determined that 10, 20ft containers were required to accommodate the 50 steel coils, each holding 5 coils. Crucially, every single container underwent a physical inspection to guarantee its structural integrity, essential for both the extensive sea voyage and the demanding overland leg in India.
- Floor Loading Capacity Calculation: To prevent any structural failure, we meticulously calculated the floor loading capacity for each container. Our strict adherence to a critical threshold of 5 tonnes per linear meter ensured the containers were never overloaded.
- Preventing Direct Contact: A core principle of our plan was to avoid any coil from making direct contact with the container floor, thereby mitigating pressure points and potential damage.
Execution: A Study in Precision
The execution phase was a testament to our commitment to precision and safety standards.
- Weight Distribution: Heavy-duty timber supports were strategically utilised to distribute the immense weight of each coil over a minimum of four to five container floor cross-members. This critical step neutralised the risk of floor failure, a common pitfall in such heavy cargo transport.
- Secure Orientation & Crating: Each steel coil was secured using the 'Eye Fore and Aft' orientation, a method specifically chosen to prevent longitudinal or rotational movement during transit. The coils were locked into custom-built cradles, providing a stable base.
- Multi-Layered Securing System: Our teams applied a comprehensive, multi-layered securing system. This involved heavy-duty strapping to achieve a total restraint strength exceeding five times the coil's weight. This critical safety factor protected against the combined dynamic forces anticipated during a long sea voyage and subsequent onward road journey.
Seamless Journey and Flawless Delivery
The proactive planning and precise execution ensured a seamless journey from the roads of the UK to the port, across thousands of nautical miles to India, and finally, onward by truck to the ultimate destination in Uttar Pradesh. The meticulous preparation meant that the cargo remained perfectly unified with its transport units throughout every step of the way.
Upon arrival in Uttar Pradesh, the results unequivocally spoke for themselves. Each of the 10 containers was opened to reveal its contents in pristine condition. The steel coils had not shifted from their secured positions, and crucially, the containers themselves were undamaged. This efficient and safe unloading allowed the client's project to proceed exactly on schedule, avoiding costly delays and unexpected damages.
